A generator pad poured in the wrong spot is expensive concrete. Gas lines, electrical conduit, code clearances, and winter snow routes all depend on where the unit finally sits. Settle placement before the pad, the gas line, and the plow path are built around a guess.

Placement is a clearance and access problem

Manufacturers and codes require clearances from windows, doors, openings, and property lines. Service techs need room to open panels and pull parts. Exhaust direction matters for the house and for neighbors. A spot that looks hidden behind a shrub may fail clearance or trap snow against the enclosure.

Walk the yard with the house, meter, proposed gas path, and electrical path in mind. Mark buried utilities you know about. Take wide photos from the street and from the proposed corner so the estimate is not based on a cropped phone shot.

Snow routes belong in the first sketch

Northern Plains winters punish generators that sit in the plow berm. Decide where trucks push snow, where roof dumps land, and how you reach the unit after a storm. Deicing products and sand should not bury the enclosure or the disconnect.

If the driveway is the only staging area for deliveries, leave room for both. A pad that is perfect in July and unreachable in January is not a finished plan.

Pad, gas, and electrical should share one drawing

Concrete thickness and size follow the chosen unit. Gas line size and route follow BTU load and distance. Electrical conduit and transfer equipment follow the panel location and the must-run list. Changing any one of those after the others are installed creates rework.

Load list still comes before unit shopping

Placement and sizing travel together. Write the loads that must run in an outage: furnace or boiler controls, well or sump, refrigeration, medical needs, shop circuits, or barn ventilation. That list affects generator size, which affects pad size and gas demand.

Fuel type and future service access

Propane and natural gas each have siting implications for tanks, meters, and regulators. Leave access for fuel delivery and for annual service. Service plans are easier to keep when the unit is not trapped behind a fence that nobody can open in January.

If you already own equipment that needs repair rather than a new install, start with residential repair and bring placement notes anyway. A repair visit is a good time to flag a unit that will fight snow every winter.

Noise, neighbors, and openings

A unit that meets clearance can still annoy a bedroom window or a neighbor’s patio. Aim exhaust and think about where people sleep and sit. Note operable windows, fresh-air intakes, and play areas. Placement is partly courtesy, not only code.

HOA or township rules may limit street-facing equipment. Bring those rules early so the “hidden” corner is checked for clearance before anyone falls in love with it.

Temporary power vs permanent placement

Job-site generators and permanent standby systems are different conversations. A temporary unit on gravel for construction should not decide the permanent pad location by habit. Permanent placement should assume decades of snow, service trucks, and fuel access.

Commercial docks and agricultural yards add vehicle traffic. Keep truck paths and generator service space from fighting each other on the same sketch used for commercial generator installation shutdown planning.

Why rework costs more than a second site walk

Moving a pad means concrete, gas, electrical, and often landscaping again. A second walk with printed clearances is cheaper. Bring stakes or spray paint so everyone agrees on the corner before excavation. If two candidate spots exist, photograph both with a tape reference to the nearest opening.

Transfer switch location rides with placement

The generator corner must connect cleanly to the transfer equipment and the panel it serves. Long conduit runs are sometimes necessary, but they should be intentional. If the only legal generator spot is far from the panel, say so early so trench and gas routes are priced with eyes open.

Agricultural yards may feed more than one building. Placement then has to respect which loads are on the automatic transfer list and which stay manual. Keep that list beside the site sketch.

Send site photos, preferred corners, window and opening locations, snow plow habits, gas meter location, electrical panel photos, and your must-run list. Mention HOA or township rules if they limit visible equipment.
